Instructor Biography: Trudy Golley

Born in Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada, Golley studied at the Alberta College of Art & Design and received her B.F.A. degree from the University of Calgary with a major in Ceramics and a minor in Art History. She went on to receive her M.F.A. degree from the University of Tasmania in Hobart, Australia. The recipient of numerous awards, scholarships and grants, Trudy’s artworks have been exhibited and collected internationally. She has taught at various institutions and, in 2002, was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. The Ceramics instructor in the School of Creative Arts at Red Deer College, she has lived and worked in Red Deer, Alberta since 2000.

Artist Statement:

“My current work explores the creation of ceramic forms that capture, obstruct, and redirect light in order to exploit its many qualities. Recently, I have started to work with industrial manufacturing processes for model development. Residencies in China have allowed me to investigate new material possibilities delivered through innovative technical processes such as physical vapour deposition (PVD), where a thin layer of titanium is transferred to an object. Such captivating, lustrous surfaces are used to control various light effects. These processes have opened up exciting new avenues that have allowed me to explore my reflective pieces at a larger scale.”

Artwork Specific Statement:

While on a residency at The Pottery Workshop Jingdezhen, I was struck by the amount of construction that was going on in close proximity to The Sculpture Factory. Tall apartment buildings were looming over the low-rise architecture of the workshops and the drone of concrete vibrators was ever-present, so much so that I remarked that it was like being inside of a bee hive. Double Bee Vase is a response to the feeling of being small and overpowered by the tall buildings, and surrounded by the hum of constant activity.
