Artist in Residence refers to the program on which artists are invited by art institutions to think, research and create in a new environment within a certain period of time. It can be referred to the artist's residency creative activities. In the residency project, artists are able to transcend national or cultural differences, can be placed in a non-daily space and live in different cultural and historical backgrounds. The communications with local people helps to obtain new stimulation, ideas, and inspirations, and provide nourishment for creation. The residency is a cultivation space for artistic productivity, and it also offers an opportunity to raise funds, establish contacts, and gather inspiration for creating arts.

The core of Zhang Lingyun's clay expression is creatures born from nature. The natural image is the common element in Lingyun's creation, such as cloud, bird, etc. Lingyun becomes outstanding in ceramics since her school days. Idyllic form and flexible line are highlights of her work. Until now, Zhang Lingyun's creative work selected by dozens of famous international exhibitions, including the National Art Exhibition, the World Ceramic Biennale in Gyeonggi, South Korea, and won the gold medal in the FRANZ Award. Lingyun is an experienced artist and has been creating and teaching in many countries. She has done four solo exhibitions in the United States, South Korea, the Netherlands, and Beijing. Besides, she gives workshops and lectures in the United States, Japan, Germany, the Netherlands, South Korea, the Czech Republic, France, Australia, Taiwan, and other countries and regions. Zhang Lingyun’s works have been collected in the Whitechapel Gallery in the UK, Museum Prinsenhof Delft in the Netherlands, the Chinese Ceramic Museum, and the Henan Provincial Museum.
Honestly, difficulties and self-doubt are unavoidable in creating. However, Lingyun sees that as challenges and thinks these are worthy. Curiosity and rich imagination push her to keep going. So that, mock-ups and iterations lying all around her studio. A winter, Lingyun took part in the SCCP’s residency program. Coincidentally, she saw a portfolio of Kazuo Yagi’s works in the SCCP Library. She was shocked by his sharpness towards substance, and his broadness on creating art that no one could compare with. Lingyun starts to spend tons of time digging into traces of seniors, and try to take a step up.
And, she did it, step by step. Through free approaches and techniques, she presented the vital characters of clay——plasticity, adhesion, flexibility, and even those little cracks.
After back to Jingdezhen, Lingyun found that either the splendid history or traditional techniques, limit the development of ceramics art in this city. She chose to break the border caused by "standards", to apply free approaches to creating. Random large brushstrokes, abstract patterns, sometimes like layers of mountains; also like a swamp; and like a cloud of chaos. She gave the right of interpretation to the viewers, hoping that they would enjoy based on their emotions and mood at the time.

"Clay is everything."
"Clay is everything." Zhang Lingyun said, this is a sentence she read when she lived in the United States in 2006. Clay is everything, this kind of creative attitude of diving into one gave her a lot of touch. Everything starts from the earth, and eventually returns to it. This process of growth backtracking complies with the law of life cycle.
