Takeshi Furukawa was born in Kyoto in 1984. He is a fourth-generation potter as his ancestor started his kiln in the 19th century. He graduated from Kyoto Prefectural Ceramic Art School in 2005. He started creating Jian ware when he was a student there. He was registered as a Kyoto Kiyomizu ware artist in 2013. His first solo exhibition was held at the main Mitsukoshi Department Store in the Nihonbashi district of Tokyo in 2013. He won prizes in the 7th Contemporary Ceramic Art for Tea Award in 2014, and the 3rd Soba Cup Award in 2014. He exhibited his works at the International Exhibition in Milan in 2015. He dedicated some of his Jian ware to the Heian Shrine in Kyoto in 2016. He exhibited his Jian ware in Shanghai in 2017. He held solo exhibitions at the Mitsukoshi Department Store in the Ginza section of Tokyo and at the Takashimaya Department Store in Kyoto in 2017 and at Dialogue Gallery in 2018. Furukawa has a good reputation as a Jian ware specialist. Jian ware is pottery that was originally made in Jianyan, Fujian Province in China. In the Song dynasty, it was used among Buddhist monks as tea-drinking ware. It has simple and elegant shapes, and subtle and beautiful glazes. It was introduced to Japan in the 11th century and was considered invaluable artwork.
