Lin Utzon has a deep connection with Mallorca, which in her words is a beautiful island with a rich culture and history, and with a magnificent nature. Nature has always been Lin Utzon's greatest source of inspiration and wonder. Lin Utzon by painting nature in black and white, in a cellular manner, and later by making sculptures in terra cotta also painted in black and white, Lin Utzon hope to make visible the essence of nature, the source from which everything comes including ourselves.

How does the environment of Majorca inspire your art?

Lin Utzon:

I remember all the beautiful ideas my parents taught me in Majorca about beauty and the miracle of life. One of my fondest memories about my early creative explorations was decorating the house my father built in Elsinore, Denmark, as a prototype for a housing scheme. My father asked me to decorate it and I did, using hundreds of coloured lollipops and candies.

How have Japan and Majorca influenced your art?

Lin Utzon:

The overall appreciation of Japanese art forms sparked my interest in crafts and painting, and Majorca was perfect for me. The Majorcan people are very kind, good, strong and independent, and there are great possibilities to make things here and to work with artisans. So I can do this here in peace.
