SOFÍA ULLAURI LLORÉ

Sofia Ullauri, a ceramist and the daughter of ceramists in Ecuador. She is part of the Barroquema workshop, founded by her parents over 40 years ago. She lives amidst the Andean volcanoes in Quito, the capital of Ecuador in South America, but she splits her time between the Galápagos Islands, where she has a studio, and the Mediterranean Sea in southern France, where she has been working on a project for the past three years.

At the age of 22, Sofia Ullauri went to study in Spain, in Talavera de la Reina, at the art school where her parents had studied. They introduced a new way of making ceramics in Ecuador, providing new perspectives to this wonderful craft.

In 2007, She began her work on the fusion of elements and the material transformation, combining soils, stones, sand, and rocks that she collect during her travels. She has been exploring this theme for over 15 years, and this recent residency has allowed her to delve deeply into the theme of migration, the stories, and experiences of human movement—something both beautiful and painful. Leaving things behind while discovering new and unknown aspects.

During this residency, She has been able to experiment with the material culture of this remarkable place, meet inspiring artists, and articulate the symbolic, subjective implications of the places where she reside temporarily or permanently in her work.

Sofia Ullauri

Sofia Ullauri's work speaks of the blending of geologic elements, the movement of the individual in the world through installations that depict landscapes, paths, and maps. The shapes and volumes serve as supports, like books where ceramics transcribe these stories.
